Our Costco review for Canada in one line: the $65 Gold Star membership is worth it if you'll use the warehouse for staples and buy one or two big-ticket items a year, because the protection on those items is what Costco does better than anyone. Below is our verdict on each part of the store, drawn from the prices, sale history and policies in our guides, with what to skip and when to buy.

Is Costco worth it in Canada?
For most households that shop there at least monthly, yes, on Gold Star. Three reasons:
- The fee is low risk. Costco refunds a dissatisfied member's fee in full; see getting your membership fee back.
- The guarantee is unusually long. Most products have no stated return deadline, and electronics get 90 days.
- Big purchases come with extras that cost money elsewhere: tire installation, a 2-year warranty on TVs and computers, appliance delivery and haul-away.
Executive is a different question. At $130 it earns a 2% reward that only beats Gold Star above $3,250 a year of eligible spending, about $271 a month. Most people should start on Gold Star and check a year of receipts; the math is in is Executive worth it, and every fee is in Costco membership prices.

| Food court | Buy | Hot dog and drink, $1.50 | Costco hot dog |
| Apple | Buy last year's model | AirPods 4 at $139.97 on clearance this fall | Apple at Costco |
| Mattresses | Buy on sale only | Every model cut at least 3 times a year | Costco mattresses |
| Furniture | Buy on sale only | Recliners, office chairs and patio sets cut every few months | Costco furniture |
| BBQs | Buy in June or on clearance | The Napoleon Rogue 625 was $300 off twice in 2026; clearance from August | Costco BBQs |
| Hot tubs and pools | Buy on markdown | The MSpa inflatable fell from $799.99 to $399.97 in October 2026 | Costco hot tubs |
| Gazebos and sheds | Buy in May or June | Hardtop gazebos drop $400 to $600 in late spring, then clear from mid-July | Costco gazebos and sheds |
| Snow blowers | Buy the gas model in the fall | The Yard Force 26-inch two-stage is $749.99 in Ontario and Atlantic warehouses; the Greenworks battery model only made sense on sale | Costco snow blowers |
| Generators | Buy on sale only | The Champion dual fuel is $999.99, or $799.99 with $200 off, which came back four times in 2026 | Costco generators |
| Dyson | Buy on sale only | On sale almost every month, $100 to $300 off | Dyson at Costco |
| Christmas trees | Buy in November | Clearance starts mid-December, when stock is thin | Costco Christmas trees |
| Eyeglasses | Get a quote | High-index 1.60 lenses at no extra cost; prices aren't published | Costco eyeglasses |
| Car rental | Compare first | One additional driver free; insurance not included | Costco car rental |
| PS5 bundle | Only if you want the extra controller | Saves $4 to $14 at regular prices | PS5 and Switch 2 |
| Gold | Only to hold for years | Can't be returned; dealers buy back below spot | Costco gold |
The pattern behind the table: Costco is at its best where the price includes something you'd otherwise pay for (installation, warranty, delivery, a long return window) and on its own label. It's weakest where you'd pay full price for something that goes on sale every few weeks. The exception is same-day delivery, where you pay above warehouse prices; see Costco same day delivery.
What isn't worth buying at Costco?
Not products so much as habits. These are the ones our data says to drop:
- Paying the regular price on big furniture, mattresses or a Dyson. Our sale tracking found each of them discounted again within a few months.
- The newest Apple model at launch. Costco's edge is the outgoing model; the current one is cheaper at Black Friday.
- Gold as a short-term trade. You can't return it, and a buyer pays less than the market price.
- Costco.ca for things your warehouse stocks. Online prices include delivery, so they're often higher; see warehouse versus online prices.
- Coupon sites. Costco's savings come off at the till; see what Costco coupons actually exist.
- Executive below the break-even, or a Business Centre trip for an ordinary family shop.
When is the best time to buy at Costco?
For big items, when it's on sale, then keep watching for 30 days. Costco refunds the difference if the price drops within 30 days of a warehouse purchase while the new price runs, which turns most timing worries into a trip to the membership counter. Black Friday 2026 is November 27, so anything bought from October 28 can be adjusted if it's cut then; see Costco Black Friday. New furniture lands in January, patio sets peak in May and June, and Christmas trees are cleared after mid-December. On the shelf, a price ending in .97 is a markdown; see Costco price codes. This period's savings, dated, are in our flyer guide. Seasonal items run on a calendar too: Costco BBQs, for example, sell down from June and clear out in August.
How does Costco protect what you buy?
Better than most Canadian retailers, in three layers:
| Layer | What you get | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Satisfaction guarantee | A refund on most products, no deadline stated | Electronics 90 days; gold, gift cards and tickets excluded |
| Concierge warranty | TVs, projectors, major appliances and computers extended to 2 years, with free tech support | Only when the maker's warranty is shorter |
| Price adjustment | The difference back if the price drops within 30 days | Item in stock and the sale still running |
Paying with the right card adds a fourth layer, such as purchase protection and an extended warranty; see the cards that pay most at Costco. Every exception and deadline is in our return policy guide.
Where does Costco fall short?
An honest review has to say where it disappoints:
- No Visa in the warehouse. Canadian warehouses take Mastercard, debit, cash, Shop Cards and Apple Pay, but not Visa or Amex; see what Costco accepts.
- Small ranges. One king mattress line in warehouses, few niche laptop configurations, and bed frames online only.
- Prices vary by region. Bakery and grocery prices differ between Western and Eastern Canada, and some sales run in one region only, so a price you read online may not be your warehouse's.
- No published prices for eyeglasses or many services, so you need a quote to compare.
- The Executive reward skips gas, pharmacy and the food court, which is where many members spend most.
How did we review Costco?
We don't take Costco's word for prices. Every figure behind these verdicts comes from a dated source in the linked guide: warehouse shelf prices photographed by the Costco West (B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) and Costco East (Ontario and Atlantic Canada) fan blogs, Costco Canada's own policy pages, and Canadian outlets such as Narcity, Daily Hive and Global News. We use Canadian prices only, label regional ones, and refresh each guide on a schedule. Flatcart is independent and isn't affiliated with Costco.
