Costco also carries Firman and A-iPower inverters, a Honeywell home standby unit and EcoFlow battery power stations from $249.99. Generator or power station: which do you need?

  • A short outage, an apartment or a quiet campsite: a power station. It makes no exhaust, so it's the only kind you can run inside; the Delta 3 can keep a fridge, modem and lights going for a while, depending on what they draw.
  • A long outage, a sump pump or a furnace fan: a gas or dual fuel generator, like the Champion. Dual fuel lets you run it on a propane tank, which stores longer than gasoline.
  • The whole house, automatically: a standby unit like the Honeywell, installed by licensed trades.

Add up the watts of what you need to run at once, and check the generator's running watts, not just the bigger starting figure on the box.

How do you run a generator safely?

Health Canada says to never run a generator indoors, or in a garage or shed, to run it at least 6 metres (20 feet) from buildings, and to point the exhaust away from open windows and doors. A generator that shuts off on its own when carbon monoxide builds up doesn't replace carbon monoxide alarms in your home (Health Canada).

Don't plug a generator into your home's wiring yourself. Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority says a generator should be connected by a licensed electrical contractor, and a permanent connection needs an ESA permit (ESA); Hydro-Québec says a permanent system needs a compliant transfer switch installed by a master electrician, because feeding power back into the lines can put utility crews at risk (Hydro-Québec).

How do you get a generator home and set up?

A portable generator comes in a heavy box, and a gas model needs oil before the first start, as its manual explains. An independent local helper can pick it up from the warehouse and bring it home (Costco pickup and delivery). For the connection to your house, or a standby unit, see generator installation and service: delivery and setup are general work, but the transfer switch needs a licensed electrician, and a natural gas line a licensed gas technician. Can you return a generator to Costco?

Generators and power stations aren't named on Costco's 90-day list, which covers TVs, major appliances, computers and the other electronics Costco lists, so the general satisfaction guarantee should apply. If you're unsure about a particular model, ask at the membership counter before the 90 days pass; the rules are in the Costco return policy.
