A Costco heater in Canada costs $24.99 to $649.99: most are ceramic towers from Lasko at about $60 to $70, often $15 to $20 off in the fall, with a De'Longhi oil-filled radiator, a Duux convector and a Dyson at the top. Electric fireplaces run from a $289.99 wall-mount to a $999.99 TV console. All of them use about 1.5 kWh an hour on high, which is the number that decides your bill.

Ceramic towers heat a room quickly with a fan. An oil-filled radiator like the De'Longhi is silent and keeps radiating after it switches off, good for a bedroom. Infrared quartz heaters warm the people and objects in front of them rather than the air, good for a drafty spot. The Dyson is a fan heater and air purifier in one, which is most of what you pay for.

How much does a space heater cost to run?

At full power a 1,500 W heater uses 1.5 kWh an hour. At Ontario's prices from November 1, 2026, that's about $0.14 an hour off-peak, $0.22 mid-peak and $0.28 on-peak, or $0.17 on the tiered price (OEB). On BC Hydro's residential rates it's about $0.18 in the first tier and $0.21 in the second (BC Hydro). Those are energy charges only, before delivery, regulatory charges and tax.

Bar chart of what a 1,500 watt space heater costs to run for an hour: Ontario, time-of-use on-peak $0.28, Ontario, time-of-use mid-peak $0.22, BC Hydro, tier 2 $0.21, BC Hydro, tier 1 $0.18, Ontario, tiered (lower tier) $0.17, Ontario, time-of-use off-peak $0.14.
A 1,500 W heater uses 1.5 kWh an hour. Eight hours a day for a month is 360 kWh: about $40 on Ontario's tiered price or $43 on BC Hydro's first tier, before delivery and tax.

A heater in one room for 8 hours a day is about 360 kWh a month, or roughly $40 to $45 before delivery and tax. Heating one room you're in can cost less than heating the whole house to the same temperature; heating the whole house with space heaters usually costs more than a furnace or heat pump.

When do Costco heaters go on sale?

  • Early September: heaters arrive (the Lasko tower on September 2, 2025 in the West, Costco West).
  • October to late November: $15 to $20 off the Lasko towers every fall, in 2026 until November 22 (Costco West).
  • November: electric fireplaces arrive.
  • January and February: fireplace savings and clearance, like $200 off the Sloan in February 2025, and heater clearance such as the Dreo at $49.97 in mid-January 2026 (Costco East).

How do you use a space heater safely?

Health Canada's rules (Health Canada):

  • Keep it at least 1 metre from anything that can burn: couches, beds, clothes and curtains.
  • Never plug it into an extension cord or power bar. Plug it straight into the wall, ideally on its own outlet.
  • Unplug it before you leave home or go to sleep.
  • Buy only heaters with a certification mark (such as CSA or cUL).

Health Canada requires portable heaters to meet Canadian standards that include tip-over and overheating tests (Health Canada), and Technical Safety BC recommends choosing one with a tip-over switch and overheat protection (Technical Safety BC).

Does an electric fireplace need an electrician?

Not a plug-in one like Costco's: the Sloan console and the Napoleon wall-mount use a regular outlet, with the same no-extension-cord rule as a space heater. A hard-wired or built-in fireplace on its own circuit is electrical work: in Ontario that means a licensed electrical contractor, with a notification filed to the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). An independent local helper can bring a fireplace console home and put it together, or hang a wall-mount unit on the studs: see furniture assembly ($99) and TV mounting ($169), at Flatcart's prices.
