Costco debit card rules in Canada: Visa Debit, Debit Mastercard and what paying by debit costs you

Costco doesn't issue its own debit card, but Canadian warehouses, Costco gas stations and Costco.ca all accept debit. In the warehouse you pay with your bank card and PIN; on Costco.ca Costco lists PIN-based debit and Debit Mastercard. Debit earns nothing, so a household spending $700 a month at Costco gives up about $132 a year against the CIBC Costco Mastercard.

There's no Costco debit card, but Costco takes yours: Costco Canada lists debit as accepted in warehouses, at Costco gas stations and on Costco.ca. In the warehouse you insert your bank card and enter your PIN; online, Costco lists PIN-based debit cards and Debit Mastercard. Debit is fine if you want to avoid credit, but it earns nothing: a household spending $500 a month in the warehouse and $200 on gas leaves about $132 a year on the table against the $0 CIBC Costco Mastercard. Does Costco accept debit cards in Canada?

Yes, everywhere. From Costco Canada's payment list, as summarized in our guide to what Costco accepts:

WhereDebitMastercard (credit)Visa (credit)
WarehouseYesYesNo
Costco gas stationYesYesNo
Costco.caYes (PIN-based debit and Debit Mastercard)YesYes

Costco gas stations also take a physical Costco Shop Card, but not cash; see paying at a Costco gas station.

Can you use Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard at Costco?

In the warehouse and at the pump, what matters is that it's a debit card with a PIN, which most Canadian bank cards are. Many of those cards also carry a Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard logo for online shopping, but in the warehouse they're used as ordinary debit. Visa credit cards still don't work there.

Online, Costco's list names Mastercard, Visa and most PIN-based debit cards, so a Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard bank card should work at checkout; if one doesn't, use a Costco Shop Card loaded in the warehouse.

Does Costco have its own debit card?

No. Costco's only payment card in Canada is the CIBC Costco Mastercard, a credit card that doubles as your membership card. If you've seen a "Costco debit card" mentioned, it's either a bank debit card used at Costco or a Costco Shop Card, which is a prepaid gift card rather than a bank card. Costco's only credit card in Canada comes from CIBC; see who issues it.

How much do you give up by paying with debit?

What the CIBC Costco Mastercard would pay on the same Costco spending, at $0 a year:

Warehouse a monthCostco gas a monthCash back a year on the card
$300$100$72
$500$200$132
$1,000$300$228

If you're an Executive member, the 2% Executive reward doesn't depend on how you pay, so you keep it with debit; the card's cash back is on top. See how the two stack.

What else does a credit card give you at Costco?

Protection. The CIBC Costco Mastercard adds purchase security for 90 days and extends the manufacturer's warranty by a year, on top of Costco's own return policy; debit has neither. For TVs, laptops and appliances, that's worth more than the cash back; see paying for big Costco purchases.

When is debit the better choice?

  • You carry a balance: at about 21.75% interest, a month of carried balance wipes out years of 1% to 3% cash back. Use debit until you can pay in full.
  • You want a hard spending limit: debit stops at what's in your account.
  • You don't qualify for a credit card yet: debit works everywhere at Costco while you build credit.

If you pay your statement in full every month, use the Costco card instead and keep the cash back.

Building credit? A secured Mastercard works at the Costco till.
